Blending Cyberpunk Aesthetics with Hong Kong's Iconic Architecture

Scarlett Fu, a renowned digital artist, draws her inspiration from her birthplace, Hong Kong. The city's diverse living conditions and rapid societal progress serve as the backdrop for her series 'Futuristic Hong Kong'. Fu's motivation for this series is both creative and philosophical, aiming to highlight the city's technological advancements and the disparity in living conditions.

The uniqueness of 'Futuristic Hong Kong' lies in its fusion of Hong Kong's close-knit architecture with the sub-genre of Cyberpunk. This combination results in a portrayal of the city's almost claustrophobic living conditions and the gradual societal suppression often associated with the dystopian nature of Cyberpunk.

The series was created using digital painting techniques in Photoshop, resulting in high-resolution pieces of 3000*3000 px at 300 dpi. The project, which started in 2017/8, was completed remotely between Hong Kong and Frankfurt am Main in 2018.

Fu's research for this series was deeply personal, drawing from her own experiences growing up in Hong Kong and her interest in the cyberpunk genre. She explored concept art, cyberpunk popular culture, films, books, and the aesthetics of local life in the metropolis. The challenge was to merge the familiar with the imagined, incorporating elements like flying vehicles and future technology into the cityscape she knew so well.

'Futuristic Hong Kong' has been recognized for its creative and technical excellence, winning the Silver in A' Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill, eliciting feelings of amazement and wonder.
